Bond requirements

In North Dakota, insurance and licensing requirements depend on your dealer category. Independent used-auto, wholesale, broker, RV, motorcycle, truck and boat businesses can have different requirements. Confirm your license category with North Dakota Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division.

Insurance and proof of coverage

Vehicle liability minimums: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident and $25,000 property damage.

Dealers need continuous business liability, including auto and other operations as applicable. These vehicle limits apply to business autos as well as personal autos.

UM, UIM and medical coverage

BI means bodily injury. PD means property damage. For example, 25/50 BI means $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

Uninsured motorist (UM)
25/50 BI required; heavy-vehicle exception
Underinsured motorist (UIM)
Matches UM; heavy-vehicle exception
PIP / first-party medical
$30,000 per person

Required vehicle coverages include $25,000/$50,000 UM bodily injury, matching UIM, and $30,000 basic no-fault benefits per person. Commercial vehicles weighing more than 20,000 pounds have an exception to the UM/UIM requirement.

Your lease, lender or exposure to a serious accident may call for higher limits. Garage liability does not automatically insure the value of inventory or customers’ vehicles.

The dealer bond is a separate requirement

Continuous surety bond

The bond amount is its face amount, not the price you pay. A surety prices the bond separately, and you may have to reimburse it for claims it pays. A dealer bond does not replace garage liability or inventory insurance. You can add a bond quote to the dealer insurance application.

State licensing fees

State feeAmount
Annual motor vehicle dealer license, including one dealer plate$100
Initial new or used dealer inspection$100
Each additional dealer plate$20

These state fees are separate from insurance and bond premiums. Other licensing and startup expenses may apply. Confirm the payable amount in the current state application or portal.

A practical filing detail

Continuous business liability must address the operations you actually perform. Tell the agent whether you sell only or also repair and service vehicles, and keep the licensing records aligned with the coverage.

What does dealer insurance cost in North Dakota?

A North Dakota comparison needs liability, UM/UIM where required and basic no-fault coverage. Heavy commercial vehicle exceptions can matter for truck dealers. Inventory value, weather exposure and the amount retained through deductibles also affect the protection being priced.
