Bond requirementsIn Georgia, insurance and licensing requirements depend on your dealer category. Independent used-auto, wholesale, broker, RV, motorcycle, truck and boat businesses can have different requirements. Confirm your license category with Georgia State Board of Registration of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers and Used Motor Vehicle Parts Dealers / Secretary of State.
Insurance and proof of coverage
Dealer garage liability minimums: $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 bodily injury per accident and $25,000 property damage.
Garage liability must appear on the certificate. The board’s application also accepts a $125,000 single limit.
UM, UIM and medical coverage
BI means bodily injury. PD means property damage. For example, 25/50 BI means $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
- Uninsured motorist (UM)
- May be rejected in writing
- Underinsured motorist (UIM)
- Part of UM; may be rejected
- PIP / first-party medical
- Not required
Georgia’s used-dealer liability limits are higher than its ordinary road-use minimums. UM can be rejected in writing. Underinsured-motorist protection is handled through Georgia’s UM coverage.
Your lease, lender or exposure to a serious accident may call for higher limits. Garage liability does not automatically insure the value of inventory or customers’ vehicles.
The dealer bond is a separate requirement
$50,000 per used-dealer license/location, effective July 1, 2026. Parts-dealer amount remains $10,000.
The bond amount is its face amount, not the price you pay. A surety prices the bond separately, and you may have to reimburse it for claims it pays. A dealer bond does not replace garage liability or inventory insurance. You can add a bond quote to the dealer insurance application.
State licensing fees
Check the linked licensing agency for the current application, renewal and plate fees.
These state fees are separate from insurance and bond premiums. Other licensing and startup expenses may apply. Confirm the payable amount in the current state application or portal.
A practical filing detail
The used-dealer bond increased to $50,000 effective July 1, 2026 under signed SB 293. Older application packets still show $35,000. Use the current statutory amount and confirm the board’s current filing instructions.
What does dealer insurance cost in Georgia?
Georgia dealers need the used-dealer garage liability limits, and inventory protection is a separate choice. A wholesale or broker operation can still have driving exposure through auction trips, deliveries and dealer-plate use. New-business status and the drivers remain part of the quote.
