Know which errors the policy addresses
Dealer E&O coverage is designed for specified negligent errors or omissions. Different products address different transaction risks, so ask which services and documents are covered rather than assuming every paperwork mistake qualifies.
Tell us whether you arrange financing, lease vehicles, sell service contracts or other products, and handle title and registration work. Include any separate entities involved in those activities.
Read the limitations
A dispute about a vehicle’s condition, an unpaid obligation, an intentional misrepresentation and an accidental document error are not the same claim. The policy wording determines what is covered, and penalties or restitution may receive different treatment.
Review any claims-made conditions, reporting deadlines, retroactive date and defense-cost treatment. Those details can matter when changing insurers or closing the business.
Keep good transaction records
Use consistent procedures for disclosures, signatures, title checks and deal files. Keep evidence of what was represented, delivered and agreed. Insurance works alongside those procedures.
If a customer sends a demand or lawsuit, notify the insurer or agent promptly and preserve the file. Avoid making a coverage promise or settling without checking the policy’s requirements.
