The quick answer

What does basic garage liability cost for a new dealer?

Based on our agency’s quoting experience, most new dealers in most states pay about $1,600–$3,100 per year for basic garage liability insurance.

That range assumes 1–2 employees, 2 dealer plates and state-minimum garage liability coverage.

Inventory coverage, workers’ compensation and property coverage add to the total. Larger inventories, higher liability limits and more drivers can also increase the price. The higher package prices below reflect the coverage and business details shown with each example.

Your location, driving records, claims history and coverage selections affect your own quote.

What these quotes show

A dealer with more coverage does not automatically cost more than every dealer with less coverage. Different locations, drivers, business histories and underwriting programs affect the result. The $3,023 Pennsylvania package and the $4,150 Illinois liability example should not be used to calculate the standalone cost of inventory insurance.

What affects auto dealership insurance costs?

Insurance companies use rating factors to estimate how likely a claim is and how much it could cost. Underwriting is the review that determines whether the business fits an insurer’s program and what terms it can offer. The same detail can affect price, eligibility or both.

For a dealer, that review includes the people driving, the activity on the premises and the vehicles being protected. Not every insurer uses the same formula, and not every factor affects every coverage.

Business history: what the insurer can learn from your track record

Time in business and dealer experience

Garage liability and overall eligibility

Why insurers consider it: An established dealership gives the insurer a record of how the business operates. Experience can also mean better controls for test drives, keys, vehicle inspections and handling customers. A new business has less history to evaluate, but the owner may already have years of dealership experience.

Dealer example: An owner opening a first lot after managing another dealership for ten years has a different background from someone entering the industry for the first time. Startup status alone does not decide the price.

Prior insurance and lapses in coverage

Available insurers, pricing and policy terms

Why insurers consider it: Continuous insurance gives an insurer a clearer history of the coverage carried and reported losses. A lapse can raise questions about when the business was operating and whether any losses occurred while uninsured. Some programs require a certain amount of prior coverage.

Dealer example: Four years in business does not necessarily mean four years of prior insurance. Those are separate details, and a startup with no prior policy is different from an established dealer whose coverage was canceled.

Claims history: how often, how large and what happened

The coverage involved in the losses

Why insurers consider it: Insurers consider both how often claims happen and how expensive they are. Repeated backing accidents may point to an ongoing driving issue. A theft may lead to questions about key control. A storm that damages many vehicles shows how much inventory can be affected in one event.

Dealer example: One hail claim and several preventable test-drive accidents tell different stories. Repairs to a damaged fence, tighter key control or new driver procedures help explain what has changed since a loss.

People and plates: who is using the vehicles, and how often?

Number of employees and what they do

Garage liability; workers’ compensation is separate

Why insurers consider it: Employee count helps describe the size and activity of the dealership. Salespeople, porters, mechanics and office staff do different work. Even employees who never drive can be part of a busy operation with more customers, vehicle movement and opportunities for a visitor to slip, trip or fall. Insurers may count driving and non-driving staff differently.

Dealer example: A title clerk may never use a dealer plate but still work in an office customers visit throughout the day. The insurer looks at the employee’s role and the actual operation; adding a non-driving employee does not automatically mean more road use.

Driver age and experience

Auto liability and driving-related losses

Why insurers consider it: Driving experience helps an insurer assess how someone may handle unfamiliar vehicles, traffic and customer demonstrations. Experience with a passenger car is also different from experience with a large truck or RV. Permitted rating factors and driver restrictions vary by state and insurer.

Dealer example: A driver who only moves cars around the lot has a different assignment from someone delivering heavy trucks on the highway. The vehicles and duties matter alongside the driver’s age and experience.

Motor vehicle records, or MVRs

Auto liability, driver eligibility and pricing

Why insurers consider it: An MVR is a driving record. Violations, license status and recorded accidents help an insurer assess driving risk. Serious or repeated violations may affect the premium or whether a driver can be included. A clean record does not erase the exposure created by frequent driving.

Dealer example: Replacing a driver can change the quote even when the dealership still has the same number of employees and plates.

Number of dealer plates

Auto liability and dealer vehicle use

Why insurers consider it: The plate count can give an insurer an indication of how many dealer vehicles could be on the road at the same time. More vehicles in use can mean more opportunities for an accident. The insurer also considers who uses the plates and how often; plate count is not a direct measurement of mileage.

Dealer example: Four plates might support several simultaneous test drives and auction trips, or only occasional use. A dealer with four plates does not automatically pay twice as much as one with two.

Furnished vehicles, commuting and personal use

Auto liability and applicable physical damage

Why insurers consider it: A furnished vehicle is a dealer vehicle made available to an owner, employee or another permitted person for regular use. Commuting, errands and personal driving can keep it on the road beyond dealership hours. That creates a different exposure from a plate used only for an occasional customer demonstration.

Dealer example: An owner who drives a dealer vehicle home every night may use it far more than a vehicle kept on the lot. The regular driver, overnight location and permitted personal use all matter. A dealer plate by itself does not establish insurance coverage or permission for that use.

Customer test drives and demonstrations

Auto liability and applicable physical damage

Why insurers consider it: Test drives put customers in vehicles they may not know well. How often demonstrations occur, whether a salesperson accompanies the customer, license checks, routes and overnight demonstrations help describe that exposure.

Dealer example: A short accompanied test drive near the lot differs from letting a customer keep a vehicle for the weekend. Motorcycle test rides, RV demonstrations and boat demonstrations also need coverage suited to the activity.

Location and storage: what can happen on the road or on the lot?

Traffic, theft and vandalism near the dealership

Liability for driving; inventory coverage for theft and damage

Why insurers consider it: Busy roads and congested intersections can create more chances for collisions. Some urban locations also have more theft and vandalism than other areas. Insurers look at the actual territory and loss experience, so “city” or “rural” alone does not tell the whole story.

Dealer example: Two dealers in the same state can receive different prices because one operates beside a busy intersection while the other has quieter access roads and different local theft experience.

Hail, wind, flood and other weather exposure

Dealers physical damage / open lot

Why insurers consider it: Weather risk varies by location. One area may have frequent hail, another coastal storms or flooding. A single event can damage many vehicles parked together, so the possible size of one loss matters as well as how often storms occur.

Dealer example: A hailstorm can dent most of an outdoor inventory in minutes. The covered causes of loss, exclusions and wind/hail or flood deductibles affect both the quote and what the dealership would pay after a covered claim.

Fencing, gates, lighting, cameras and key control

Inventory theft and vandalism; insurer eligibility

Why insurers consider it: An unprotected lot can be easier to enter and harder to monitor. Working barriers, lighting, cameras and secure key storage can make theft more difficult or help detect it. Insurers look at the combination of controls and whether they are maintained.

Dealer example: A camera does not stop someone from taking keys left in an unlocked office. A locked gate, controlled key cabinet and consistent closing routine address different parts of the same risk. There is no universal discount for any one device.

Indoor storage versus an open lot

Dealers physical damage / open lot

Why insurers consider it: A suitable, secured building can reduce direct exposure to theft, vandalism, hail and some wind-related damage compared with leaving vehicles outside. The insurer also considers the building itself, security, roof condition, fire protection and flood exposure.

Dealer example: Moving vehicles into a locked building overnight changes their exposure. It does not eliminate it: fire, flooding or a damaged roof could still affect multiple vehicles. The building policy and the insurance for vehicles stored inside are separate coverage questions.

Off-site lots and overnight storage

Inventory, transit and location-specific terms

Why insurers consider it: A second lot, storage building, residence or temporary holding area can have different security and weather risks from the main dealership. Insurers need to evaluate where vehicles actually spend time and how much value is concentrated at each place.

Dealer example: Overflow inventory parked at an unfenced lot down the road is a different exposure from inventory secured at the main location. Coverage for the primary address should not be assumed to extend to every storage site.

Operations and coverage: what is being insured, and how much can a loss cost?

Vehicle types, values and repair costs

Auto liability and dealers physical damage

Why insurers consider it: A dealership selling ordinary used cars presents a different mix of risks from one selling performance cars, heavy trucks, RVs, motorcycles or boats. Vehicle size and use can affect accident severity, while value, parts and repair complexity can affect the cost to fix or replace inventory.

Dealer example: A few high-value units can create a large inventory exposure. Selling trucks also raises questions about driver experience, weight and demonstrations that would not apply in the same way to a small passenger-car lot.

Retail, wholesale, brokerage and sales activity

Garage liability and related operations

Why insurers consider it: How vehicles are sold affects customer visits, test drives, handling and movement. Sales volume can help an insurer understand how active the business is. A wholesale license may mean less public foot traffic, but frequent auction trips and deliveries still create driving exposure.

Dealer example: A broker who never takes possession of a vehicle differs from one who stores and delivers cars. Neither the license label nor the number of cars on the lot explains the full operation.

Radius of operations and delivery mileage

Auto liability, collision and transit exposure

Why insurers consider it: Radius describes how far the business regularly operates from its base. Longer trips generally mean more time and miles on the road, potentially through unfamiliar routes, heavy traffic or different weather. Insurers may consider the usual radius, trip frequency and occasional longer journeys.

Dealer example: Weekly 200-mile auction pickups create different exposure from occasional ten-mile local deliveries. Radius and mileage are related, but they are not the same: many short trips can add up to substantial driving.

How vehicles are transported

Auto liability, inventory in transit and transport-related coverage

Why insurers consider it: Vehicles driven by employees create direct driving exposure. Contract drivers can create similar road exposure even when paid on a 1099 basis; the tax label alone does not decide insurance status. An independent auto hauler moves vehicles as cargo, bringing a different set of loading, transport and coverage questions.

Dealer example: An employee driving a purchase back from auction, a contract driver making that trip and a third-party hauler carrying it on a truck are three different arrangements. A hauler’s insurance does not automatically replace the dealer’s protection; contracts, cargo limits, deductibles and the dealer policy’s transit terms still matter.

Repairs, towing, repossessions and customer vehicles

Garage liability, garagekeepers and any needed additional coverage

Why insurers consider it: Repair work can lead to claims involving completed work or damage to customer vehicles. Towing and repossessions add different driving, handling and liability risks. An insurer needs to distinguish work performed by the dealership from work assigned to an outside business.

Dealer example: A BHPH dealer using a repossession contractor differs from one whose staff perform repossessions. A lot that also services customers’ cars needs to consider garagekeepers and repair-related exposures in addition to its sales operation.

Total inventory and the most expensive vehicle

Dealers physical damage / open lot

Why insurers consider it: The total inventory value shows how much stock could be damaged in a major event. The per-auto maximum limits the amount available for an individual unit. Seasonal peaks, floorplan purchases and the concentration of vehicles at each location can all affect the protection needed.

Dealer example: A $250,000 total inventory limit with a $25,000 per-auto maximum is different from coverage for $50,000 vehicles. Increasing the total limit alone does not increase the per-auto maximum.

Liability limits and contract requirements

Garage liability, umbrella and required endorsements

Why insurers consider it: Higher liability limits make more insurance available for a covered claim, which can increase the premium. Landlords and other contracts may require limits above the state minimum. Different insurers and coverage packages can still produce different prices for similar limits.

Dealer example: Our Illinois quote used $1 million in garage liability to meet a landlord requirement. Comparing it with a minimum-limit quote without accounting for that difference would not be a fair price comparison.

Deductibles and the causes of loss covered

Physical damage, garagekeepers and other selected coverages

Why insurers consider it: A deductible is the portion of a covered loss the dealership pays. Accepting a higher deductible can reduce the insurer’s share and may lower the premium. Wind/hail or flood terms can work differently from collision terms, including separate event deductibles or minimum amounts.

Dealer example: Two inventory quotes may show the same total limit but have very different storm deductibles. Compare what is covered and how the deductible applies before deciding which price works better for the business.

Why the same plate count can produce different quotes

Picture two dealers with two plates each. At one, a single owner uses the plates for occasional local trips. At the other, an owner and an employee take dealer vehicles home, commute daily and make regular out-of-town pickups. The plate count matches, but the time on the road and number of regular drivers do not.

The same goes for inventory: identical vehicles kept in a secured building and on an unprotected outdoor lot face different risks. That is why the insurer looks at the whole operation.

Garage liability cost vs. inventory insurance cost

Garage liability insurance and dealers physical damage pay for different kinds of losses. A liability-only price does not include the value of the cars on your lot. Garagekeepers is different again: it addresses eligible customer vehicles in your care.

CoverageWhat it addressesWhat affects the price
Garage liabilityLiability for covered dealer operations and autosLimits, drivers, plates, vehicle use, sales activity, premises and claims.
Dealers physical damage / open lotCovered physical damage to eligible dealer inventoryTotal inventory value, per-auto maximum, location, storage, perils and deductibles.

Other business coverageProperty, workers’ compensation, umbrella, E&O or cyber as selectedEmployees, buildings, contracts and the exposures each policy covers.
Dealer bondThe obligations described by the state bondRequired face amount, underwriting, bond term and the surety’s quoted premium.

An inventory limit is not the premium

The Pennsylvania quote includes a $50,000 total inventory limit and a $12,000 maximum per auto. Those numbers describe coverage. The annual package premium was $3,023. If a dealership starts carrying individual vehicles worth more than the per-auto maximum, the total inventory limit alone does not solve that gap.

For financed stock, review the floorplan company’s required limits, deductibles and loss-payee wording. Explore floorplan financing companies or read about dealers physical damage coverage.

Auto dealership insurance costs by state

The state affects required coverage, but your dealership’s address and operations also affect pricing. A state’s liability minimum is a coverage amount—not an insurance price.

Liability figures below use thousands for split limits: 25/50/25 means $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. CSL means combined single limit.

Alabama dealer insurance cost

The dealer liability filing is one part of the price. For inventory coverage, the lot address, vehicles kept outside, storm exposure and the way keys are secured also matter. A higher-value inventory can change the quote even when the plate count stays the same.

Michigan dealer pricing needs a full no-fault review. The selected liability limits, PIP medical level and required property protection all matter. A company named insured has different PIP choices from an individual, so a quote cannot be compared on liability alone.

Lowest selectable vehicle liability limits: 50/100/10. The lower bodily-injury limits require a valid election; default limits and no-fault coverages also apply. Michigan insurance requirements and dealer bonds

How the dealer type changes the cost

Established used-car dealers

A renewal should account for current inventory, employees, plates and operations. A clean insurance history can help, but a growing dealership may need more coverage than it did a year ago.

Coverage details

New and startup dealers

Owner experience, the location, planned sales, drivers and coverage needs still matter when the business has no prior insurance history. A startup quote should reflect the operation being opened.

Coverage details

Wholesalers and brokers

Auction pickups, delivery trips, custody of vehicles and plate use still create exposure even with little public foot traffic. A broker who never handles a car has different needs from one who stores and drives inventory.

Coverage details

Buy-here-pay-here dealers

Financing activity does not eliminate the usual lot and driving exposures. Servicing vehicles, repossessions and customer information can create additional coverage needs.

Coverage details

RV and truck dealers

Higher unit values, larger vehicles, drivers and demonstration routes can change the quote. Trucks used as motor carriers can trigger requirements beyond ordinary dealer operations.

Coverage details

Motorcycle and boat dealers

Test rides, water demonstrations, seasonal storage, transport and repair work deserve their own coverage review. These activities should not be priced as if the business only sells passenger cars.

Coverage details

Annual premium, down payment and monthly payments

The annual premium is the quoted price for the policy year. The down payment is the initial policy payment. The monthly payments are the installment amount and number of payments shown in the quote.

Our Ohio example shows a $963.00 annual premium, $403.00 down and 9 monthly payments of $71.00. Use the quoted schedule when planning your cash flow. Do not assume the down payment replaces the first of twelve equal payments.

Dealer bond premiums and state license or plate fees are separate expenses. You can request a bond quote in the same dealer insurance application.

How to manage your dealer insurance cost

  1. Compare the same coverage. Match liability limits, inventory values, covered drivers, locations and deductibles before comparing premiums.
  2. Keep driver information current. Changes in owners, employees or permitted drivers can change the risk.
  3. Protect the lot and the keys. Maintain the security controls described in the application and ask how the insurer treats them.
  4. Choose a deductible the business can pay. A higher deductible may lower the premium, but the retained loss still belongs in your budget.
  5. Review the inventory limit. Account for seasonal peaks and the most expensive vehicle, along with any floorplan requirements.
  6. Keep coverage continuous. Arrange renewals before the current policy ends and review cancellation notices promptly.
  7. Review changes before renewal. Added plates, a second lot, new vehicle types or repair work can call for different coverage.

There is no fixed discount for every camera, fence or claim-free year. The insurer’s underwriting and rating rules determine whether a change affects the price.

Dealer insurance cost questions

How much does auto dealership insurance cost?

Based on our agency’s quoting experience, most new dealers in most states pay about $1,600–$3,100 per year for basic garage liability insurance, with 1–2 employees, 2 dealer plates and state-minimum garage liability coverage. Inventory coverage, workers’ compensation and property coverage add to the total. Larger inventories, higher liability limits and more drivers can also increase the price. The examples on this page are real quotes issued by our agency, Pro Risk Solutions dba dealership.insure. Your location, driving records, claims history and coverage selections determine your own quote.

What is the average cost of used car dealer insurance?

For a new dealer with 1–2 employees, 2 dealer plates and state-minimum garage liability coverage, $1,600–$3,100 per year is a typical range in most states based on our agency’s quoting experience. Inventory, workers’ compensation and property coverage add to that cost. Compare the coverage and business details behind each example; a larger dealership package can include much more than a small dealer’s basic liability policy.

Are these real dealer insurance quotes issued by your agency?

Yes. These 55 examples are real quotes issued by Pro Risk Solutions dba dealership.insure. We show the state, coverage, quote date and available payment details, without customer names or cities. Each quote reflects that dealership’s circumstances and selected coverage.

Why are some dealer insurance quote examples much higher?

Inventory coverage, workers’ compensation and property coverage add to the total. Larger inventories, higher liability limits and more drivers can also increase the price. For example, some packages cover the vehicles on the lot as well as the building and business property. Check what each premium includes. For a new dealer with 1–2 employees, 2 dealer plates and state-minimum garage liability coverage, our agency’s typical basic garage liability range in most states is $1,600–$3,100 per year.

Can I pay for dealer insurance monthly?

Payment plans may be available. The quote should clearly show the annual premium, down payment and amount and number of monthly payments. Our Ohio example shows a $963.00 annual premium, $403.00 down and 9 monthly payments of $71.00. That is one actual payment schedule. A monthly installment is not necessarily one-twelfth of the annual premium.

Does a new dealership always pay more for insurance?

Not always. A startup has no operating or insurance history for that business, but the owner’s experience, driving record, location, inventory and planned activity still matter. An established dealer with claims, more drivers or higher limits can cost more. Compare the coverage and business details in each example, rather than assuming business age alone determines the price.

Does each dealer plate have a fixed insurance cost?

There is no single per-plate price that applies to every dealer. The insurer considers the plate count and how the plates are used, along with drivers, vehicles, territory and coverage. More plates can indicate more vehicles on the road at the same time. Regularly furnished vehicles used for commuting or personal driving can also create more road use than occasional test drives. Adding a plate can change the quote, but multiplying a supposed price per plate does not reliably calculate the policy premium.

Is wholesale dealer insurance cheaper than retail dealer insurance?

Wholesale operations can have different exposures, but they are not automatically cheaper. A wholesaler may have fewer customer visits while still making auction trips, moving inventory and using dealer plates. A broker’s custody of vehicles and any driving activity matter too. Compare the operation and coverage rather than assuming the license label decides the price.

How much does dealers physical damage add to the cost?

The added premium depends on inventory value, maximum value per vehicle, location, storage, covered causes of loss and deductibles. Our Pennsylvania example had a $3,023 total annual premium for $50,000 garage liability plus $50,000 inventory coverage, with a $12,000 per-auto maximum. That total is a package price; it does not identify the separate cost of inventory coverage.

Does floorplan financing affect dealer insurance costs?

A floorplan agreement can require inventory coverage, specific deductibles and loss-payee wording. Those coverage requirements affect what you buy. The number of floorplan companies alone does not establish an automatic surcharge. Compare each lender’s requirements with the policy’s inventory limit, per-auto maximum and covered locations.

Why can my dealer insurance premium increase with no claims?

A clean claims history is only one part of the price. The dealership may have added drivers, plates, inventory, locations or new operations. Coverage limits and deductibles may have changed. An insurer’s rates and underwriting appetite can also change, along with vehicle repair costs and regional loss experience. Compare the renewal against the prior policy before assuming the increase came from your own claims.

Do cameras and a fenced lot lower dealership insurance costs?

Lot protection can help an insurer evaluate theft and physical-damage exposure. Useful controls include maintained fencing and gates, lighting, cameras, controlled key storage and secure after-hours procedures. A carrier may consider those controls in pricing, eligibility or required terms. There is no universal discount percentage, and cameras alone do not determine the premium.

What does insurance cost for RV, truck, motorcycle or boat dealers?

Specialty dealer pricing depends on the vehicles and operations. RV values and size, truck use and weight, motorcycle test rides, and boat storage or water demonstrations can all change the coverage needed. A used-car liability example should not be treated as a specialty-dealer rate. Request coverage for the actual inventory and demonstrations the business conducts.

Is the dealer bond included in the insurance price?

The dealer bond is a separate product with its own premium. A $25,000 or $50,000 bond requirement describes the bond’s face amount, not what it costs to buy. State license and plate fees are separate expenses too. You can add a dealer bond quote to the dealer insurance application.

Why does the dealership’s location affect insurance cost?

Location helps an insurer assess local traffic, accident exposure, theft, vandalism and weather losses. A busy urban area may create more driving and theft exposure, while another location may be more exposed to hail, wind or flood. The risks affect different coverages: accident exposure matters to liability, while weather damage to inventory matters to dealers physical damage. Two dealers in the same state can have different prices.

Why do employees who do not drive affect garage liability pricing?

A dealership has liability exposures beyond driving. Office staff, sales support and other non-driving employees can be part of an operation with customer visits, vehicle handling and premises activity. An insurer may use employee count and job duties to help measure the scale of that operation. Visitor slip-and-fall claims are one example of premises exposure. Employee injuries are a separate workers’ compensation issue. Insurers do not necessarily count every employee the same way.

What is a furnished vehicle for dealer insurance?

A furnished vehicle is a dealer vehicle made available to an owner, employee or another permitted person for regular use. This may include commuting and personal driving. Regular access can mean more road use than occasional test drives, so the driver, use and overnight storage matter to the quote. Coverage and permitted plate use still depend on the policy and applicable rules.

Does keeping inventory indoors reduce insurance costs?

Secure indoor storage can reduce exposure to theft, vandalism, hail and some wind-related damage compared with an open lot. It may affect pricing, eligibility or required terms, depending on the insurer. The building’s security, condition, fire protection and flood exposure still matter. Indoor storage does not guarantee a discount or make every loss covered.

Does the distance I drive for auctions and deliveries affect my quote?

It can. Insurers may consider the regular operating radius, mileage and trip frequency because these help describe time on the road. Frequent long-distance pickups can expose vehicles and drivers to more traffic, changing weather and unfamiliar routes. A large number of short local trips can also create substantial exposure.

Are 1099 contract drivers treated differently from employees?

The insurer considers who drives, how often, whose vehicles they use and the actual relationship with the dealership. Being paid on a 1099 basis does not automatically remove a driver from the dealership’s insurance exposure or determine whether that person is covered. Driver eligibility, policy terms and any contractor coverage need to fit the arrangement.

Does using an auto hauler remove my insurance exposure?

No. Shipping vehicles with an independent hauler differs from having employees or contract drivers drive them, but vehicles can still be damaged during loading, transport or unloading. The hauler’s cargo insurance, limits, deductibles and contract terms matter, along with the dealer policy’s transit coverage. Do not assume the hauler’s certificate guarantees payment for every loss.
